Writer Gary Dauberman told Den of Geek in June 2019 that his goal with the remake of Salem’s Lot is to make vampires scary again
Synopsis
An author returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to discover that the townspeople are being attacked by a bloodthirsty vampire. He wants to move away from the sexier, more romanticized undead that has infested pop culture for much of the past quarter-century, thanks to everything from Interview with the Vampire to Twilight to The Vampire Diaries. When Ben is reading old newspapers on microfilm at the library, a headline reads “Local Couple Victims of DUI.” The newspaper was supposedly printed in 1956, at a time when the term “DUI” was not yet in use. References Trog (1970).
I loved the vampire aspect
SundownWritten and performed by Gordon LightfootCourtesy of Warner RecordsBy arrangement with Warner Music Group Film & TV. TV Licensing. I haven’t read the book so I can’t compare it to that. There was definitely a good creepy atmosphere.
Good action scenes
It had the makings of a good horror movie, I just think it would have worked better as a miniseries. We needed more time to get to know these characters better. More time to develop these relationships. I think Lewis does a really good acting job with what he’s given, but his character needs more development.
He’s a non-important character
His backstory doesn’t play into the story in any way except in a vague “only the outsiders win” way. Like he thinks being a writer (as well as being the obvious Stephen King stand-in) would serve a purpose, like maybe he’s the one doing the research, but no. The only thing we know about him is that his parents died when he was a kid and that doesn’t serve any purpose either. Again, at least Lewis does a good job with what little he’s given.

But like I said, I think a miniseries would have been better to give the characters more time. Check out the movies and TV shows coming to streaming this month.
